The presentation portrait has the Royal Signature at the bottom, dated 1933, in the original wooden frame. Her Majesty The Queen Mary was Queen consort of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions, and Empress of India as the wife of the King-Emperor George V. She was born Princess Mary of Teck on 26 May 1867 at Kensington Palace, daughter of Francis, Duke of Teck and Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge. First, she was engaged to Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence and Avondale, the eldest son of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, and was heir to the British Throne. After their engagement, the prince died from influenza in the pandemic of 1889–92. His younger brother and new heir to the throne saw it as his duty to take his brother's would-be bride as his own. They had 6 children, 2 of which were Kings of England - Edward VII who abdicated the throne to marry Wallis Simpson, and George VI father of Queen Elizabeth II. Queen Mary died on 24 March 1953 during the reign of her grand-daughter Elizabeth II. For more information, please visit Wikipedia's Mary of Teck page |
