Hanuman Biting An Arrow
King Prajadhipok
Hanuman is the Monkey God from the Hindu Epic "Ramayana". Praya Bhirom Bhakdi, the Founder of Boon Rawd Brewery, was born in the Year of The Monkey. The arrow was granted use by His Majesty King Prajadhipok (Rama VII) who had as his Royal Seal 3 arrows. His Majesty supported the building of Siam's first brewery, excited in the new modern technology that was brought into the Kingdom, as well as an industry that could supply more jobs for the Thai people during the time of World Depression. Praya Bhirom Bhakdi asked the king if he could incorporate the arrows from the king's emblem in the company's logo, to make it a long-lasting honour to His Majesty, and the king granted a single arrow. Boon Rawd Brewery's logo thus became the Hanuman catching the single arrow shot by the King, a befitting honour to both man and king who had the hands in founding Siam and Thailand's very first brewery.

The new version of the Hanuman Biting an Arrow

Above is a copy of the original sculpture of the Hanuman Biting An Arrow decorating the outer wall of the old brewery. With tthe newer brewery building built in 1967 in front, the old artwork has been hidden for more than 40 years. I was surveying the building one day in preparation for a new museum and found the old artwork in a state of neglect and decay. We hired an artist to repair the damage, and the result was copied, and hanged in Zone 4 of the Singha Museum. The original is still hidden above, but covered to protect from the sun and rain.

Below is a photo of the original brewery with arrow pointing at the location of the sculpture.
