Today began very excitingly for me. I woke up early to catch the 8am show of His Majesty the King's private movies taken by the Court's official cameraman, shown all day on Channel 9. The first showing was the Coronation Ceremony in 1950, which brought goosebumps! There were other movies about His Majesty's trips around Thailand and about his many projects. At 1pm, I waited eagerly to watch the live broadcast of the first meeting between Their Majesties and the foreign Monarchs and Royal representatives. The King was smiling quite a bit, as well as the Queen, Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn and Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. It was just nice to see so many new faces that many of us are not quite used to. I think that many of the royals have never met each other either, and it is a nice thought that this event on Thai soil brought them together - Europeans, Middle Easterns, African, and Asians. The last time we had such a large gathering of Royals was during the Coronation of King Vajiravudh (Rama VI) in 1911. I am just proud that we can show off our ancient traditions to the visiting royals, as well as the architecture of the magnificent royal buildings. Though these buildings are in the European style, there are still special touches that are uniquely Thai. It is most impressive also that all the Asian sovereigns are united in one place - the Sultan of Brunei, The Emperor of Japan, The Kings of Cambodia and Malaysia and the Crown Prince of Bhutan. The only one missing is the King of Nepal, due to some problems at home. I hope that these gatherings will be more often, as I think it necessary to keep that special friendship at a personal level. |
